When it comes to fire testing we really do take it seriously.

Since the tragic fires at Grenfell Tower on the 14th of June 2017, we have worked night and day with professionals in the field to be sure our boards are suitable for use in fire applications.

We have run multiple tests at Warrington Fire (www.warringtonfire.com) on our 12mm STS Construction boards, including:

  • Internal Party Wall on timber build-up

  • Internal Party Wall on LGS (light gauge steel) build-up

When working with professional fire advisors, architects and contractors we found a common need. This was the ability to have a simple build-up that was highly tested, fast to install and offered the required fire rating. The other key point many mentioned was that, whilst lab tests are great there is nothing like having your boards tested in a real-life situation.

We decided to team up with a group of fire investigators and The Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh (www.fireservicecollege.ac.uk) to really put our boards through their paces.

We lined a 20ft container with our 12mm STS Construction Board and with the help of the team there, kitted the room out like a flat and then set fire to it.

We also had the opportunity to run a like-for-like test against a room lined with a gypsum-based board to see how they compared to our STS Construction Board in a real-life fire situation.

The Results were staggering…!!!

Both the fire investigators and the Head of Prevention & Protection Training were amazed that not only did the STS Construction board perform so well under immense heat but also how well they performed when the fire was extinguished with high-pressure, cold water.

The comment was made by a fire investigator that if he had to visit two fires and one was in a building with our board and one was in a building with a gypsum-based board he would choose our board any day!
