With the UK in lockdown home fitness equipment sales have boomed. More and more people are making the most of looking after their physical health at home, finding hours in the day that weren’t there before to go for a walk or hit the weights in the garden. What ever it is we, as a nation, are acutely aware that we have to do more at home to look after ourselves physically but what about our mental health? Below you will find a few suggestions of the types of things our team are doing to keep themselves mentally happy and healthy.

There has been a significant amount of changes to everyones lives in such a short space of time. Whether you are on furlough, self employed or indeed, still working, dealing with the current economic and political climate can be overwhelming to say the least. Many of us are facing changes at home; having to work from odd locations like the kitchen counter,  little ones around our feet,  a hefty pay cut, partners no longer working – what ever it is we promise you, you are not alone. In testing times it’s important to sit back and take some much needed time to breathe – this post is all about what the STS team have found helpful during this crisis, we are in no way health care professionals, just a family focussed company hoping you find something helpful or new in our blog.

Take 5 minutes for you

Its so easy to get caught up in the everyday especially when things are a little rocky. We as a society focus on the end game. We have a goal and we have plans to get there, which is great…until someone drops the word “epidemic” and carefully laid plans and normal routine head straight out the window. Accepting that we are a while away normality returning can be scary.  Take 5 minutes out of your day to just sit and relax on your own, we’d recommend a mug of (Yorkshire) Tea, TV/Radio/Laptop off & phone away, and just a few moments to reflect internally.  Count the things you are grateful for, your health, happiness, amazing friends and family, the huge slice of banana bread you just ate which you made yesterday…(delicious by the way!). It doesn’t matter what it is but taking 5 minutes to just truly switch off and remind yourself that there is so much good in your life can do wonders for the mind and soul. 

Keep In Touch

Technology really is amazing – whether its a WhatsApp chat, facebook comment, phone call of FaceTime, technology is enabling us to be closer to our loved ones everyday throughout this lockdown. Ok, so talking to your mother who lives in Essex via a 7inch screen is not the sae as sitting in the same room and having a natter but it really is just as good. We’ve set up weekly group group calls with many of our families just to touch base and check in especially with older family who we know might be struggling. We’ve even gone so far as to get dressed up and sit and have a glass of wine with our family while jamming on various musical instruments on a Friday night- our neighbours love us! Set up a call and keep in touch, whether you join an online quiz night together, play some music or literally just have a catch up make sure you keep in touch, friendly faces are always a boost to morale.

Talk About It

Everyone struggles now and again and you aren’t expected to just keep on trouping. If you feel down, talk to someone, have your moment, just don’t keep it all bottled up.  If you keep in how you are feeling, especially if you are living with people you will only end up flipping your lid and feeling bad afterwards. Talk to people, tell them how you feel or whats rubbing you up the wrong way and get it out in the open so it can be dealt with. Letting things fester can cause tensions and we think they are best avoided.

Find a Hobby

Now is the perfect opportunity to take up a new hobby or learn a new skill. Our team have tried (might I add with varying degrees of success) baking, crochet, calligraphy and just reading a good book series in order to occupy our minds with something other than the news. Sometimes switching off the electronics and doing something for yourself is a great way to reprioritise your head space and focus on a little you time. Find a course online, we use Udemy a lot because its pocket friendly for the most part, or you could just find some good old YouTube videos to set you on your way to keeping your hands and your mind busy.

Let that just sink in…this is only temporary. This will come to an end and we will all be able to return to our normal lives hopefully with a better understanding of how we can support our colleagues, family, friends and fellow man through hard times.
