How to finish tiling a doorway

How to finish tiling a doorway

In every home in the UK, you will encounter transitions between carpets and tiles. Carpets have been a popular floor finishing inUnfinished carpet to tile transition England since the early 16th Century and to this day they still give a home a warm and comfortable feeling. Tiles have always been a feature in homes, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens, but now with the increase in popularity of larger tiled rooms such as day rooms and hallways, plus the increase of the value of the tiles being used, it is important to make sure the transition is finished to the highest standard.

Transition trims are therefore the ideal solution for going from carpet to tile. Transition trims come in many shapes and sizes and are made to cope with different heights of both carpet and tile, so you're not left with a messy edge.

At STS, we have a couple of different types of transition trims in stock that work in slightly different ways.

Knock Down trimFirstly, we have Knock Down trims, or Z Bars. These transition trims are a one piece trim with carpet hooks on one side. This trim should be installed at the same time as the last tile, which slots into the side, and then the trim can be knocked down to the appropriate height required. These trims can also be used with laminate flooring, as the carpet hooks are quite soft and can be folded down to accommodate the laminate.

We also stock Clip Fit trims. These transition trims are a two piece trim, where the base is Clip fit transition triminstalled first and then the top is clipped in, once the height has been adjusted appropriately. With this trim, you also get a red and a yellow height adjuster to allow any size of tile or capet.

Both trims are available in 3ft/900mm length, and the clip fit is available in 2.5m length as well. Both are available in silver and gold.

STS receives ISO 9001:2015 accreditation!

We are pleased to announce that STS are newly ISO 9001:2015 accredited!

ISO 9001:2015 is an international standard that specifies the requirement of a Quality Management system. Companies that hold the ISO 9001:2015 accreditation are able to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet both customer and regulatory requirements.

We were keen to achieve this accreditation as it fits with the STS ethos of constant improvement, and it will help us identify areas in which we can change to be more effective - be that in terms of services or new product developments. The standard also highlights the importance of customer feedback for a business, so let us know how we're doing here!

Dunlop Multi Skill 2017 Grand Final!

Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:18:52 Europe/London

Dunlop Multi Skill 2017 Grand Final!

On Thursday 15th June, Eddie, Dan, and Rachel jaunted over to Building Adhesives Ltd in Trentham for the final of the Multi Skill 2017 Challenge. This was it, the culmination of six weeks of college visits, of students becoming college champions and vying for a position in the Grand Final.

STS and NoMorePly were keen to engage in the Multi Skill challenge as we believe in the impact training can have on the industry. With there being such a skills shortage in the construction sector, it really is key that the future construction workers are inspired to stay within the industry and nurtured to grow and develop, and the Multi Skill Challenge is a great example of that. The Multi Skill Challenge is a great way to engage with the next generation of professionals and give back to them, not to mention encourage them for the future. We were overjoyed to be asked to be partners on this challenge and to work with such a great bunch of people at Dunlop.

Multi Skill Collage 1The day started with a welcome presentation from Debi and Gareth of Dunlop, and then the challenges began. The students were split into three groups and set off on their first challenge.

There were three disciplines in total - Carpentry, Painting & Decorating, and Tiling. Nicola Butcher, double award winning carpenter judged the carpentry challenge with a keen eye; Wayne De Wet, multiple award winning decorating consultant judged the painting and decorating challenge; Dave Rowley, lead judge for the national SkillBuild finals for wall and floor tiling and Training Manager at Dunlop was judging the tiling challenge. Three wonderful judges that are outstanding in their fields, and they were gracious enough to give up their time to attend, for which we were all grateful.

The carpentry challenge consisted of cutting a 90 degree external mitre, 90 degree internal scribe and then finish with a mitred return to the wall.
The painting and decorating challenge consisted of neatly filling in different sized holes with the appropriateMulti Skill Collage 2 material and correctly measuring and applying two drops of patterned wallpaper.
The tiling challenge consisted of correctly installing 12mm NoMorePly onto plasterboard, and then tiling a pattern onto the board including cutting the tiles to size.

The day progressed and the challenges continued, the college champions expertly completing one challenge after another, whilst being expertly overseen by us, Dunlop and the judges.

Lunch rolled around and the champions enjoyed it in the Stoke sunshine before heading back in for the third and final challenge of the day.

The challenges were completed at around 15:00, and the judges went to tally the marks and confer on a winner. The college champions waited anxiously in the auditorium for the announcement.

Multi Skill Collage 3Finally, after much waiting, the presentation started. Debi handed out certificates and goody bags to all of the college champions, but as always there can only be one winner.

After the votes had been counted and verified, the winner was announced as Jason Skitt of Walsall College! Jason collected his trophy and looked absolutely delighted doing so.

We at STS and NoMorePly would like to congratulate Jason massively on his win, and thank everyone involved both on the day and throughout the heat stages.

Here's to #MultiSkill2018!

Product Launch - April 2017

Friday, 7 April 2017 15:13:32 Europe/London

New Product Launches!

Here at STS, we're always developing new ways of doing things to bring you new and innovative products. This month sees the launch of two new products which are an improvement on some old ones.

MegaTank Kit

Our new MegaTank Kit is unlike anything currently on the market. Our revolutionary BlueTank membrane is a one-coat tanking membrane which dries in approximately two hours. This dramatically decreases installation time as there is no waiting period between coats. Mega Tank Kit

The Tanking Primer contains quartz particles for improved adhesion, and is ready to receive the BlueTank membrane when touch dry.
The kit comes with a roll of waterproof tape with a split back for sealing the edges of the tray and bedding into corners.

MegaTank is an 8m2 kit and is available from 18th April.

Torx Screws

Torx Screws were developed as we have listened to feedback about our NoMorePly screws, and how they need improving.

Torx ScrewsThe Torx screws are easier to use because they stay on the drill better and stay locked in until the screw is fully driven in.  This makes it a better way of getting the screw absolutely flush with the board with no raised head.  Each box comes with a Torx drill bit so no tradesperson has to worry about not having a Torx bit currently.

The Torx Screws ara available in boxes of 50s and 200s, in both 25mm and 38mm and are available to purchase now

NMBS Exhibition Roundup

NMBS Exhibition 2017 Roundup

On 5th April 2017, a team of Navy-and-White-clad people armed with boxes of lindt chocolate and two rubber ducks descended on the NMBS CollageRICOH Arena in Coventry for the NMBS Exhibition. At 8:45am, the doors opened and the day began, with merchant members flooding the hall in no time at all.
There were some really awesome stands at the exhibition - Ox had sand sculptures, Hitatchi were playing some great music all day and Dickies workwear had living mannequins (which were only moderately terrifying).

Our stand was consistently busy all day, with visitors from customers new and old. It was great to catch up with some of our current customers, putting a face to a name was a good experience for those who don't get to get out of the office much.
Vanessa spent some of the day chasing people around with chocolate in an effort to get them to speak to her, so she had the most conversations of any of our reps at the stand.

NMBS Collage 2

Our new MegaTank tanking kit and Torx Screws went down a treat, with orders received for both. More on those in a separate blog to come.

We're really grateful to everyone who came to see us on our stand, you all helped to make a good day great.

Roll on next year when we get to do it all again!

Safe to say they've come a long way since the 70s!

Millcot work with a wide range of suppliers to bring an extensive range of stock to their customers, which can either be collected at their trade counter or dispatched overnight for next day delivery. They have their own vans that they use for local deliveries, or a courier service for more far-flung places.

Millcot regularly hold trade days and demonstration mornings, with reps from all sorts of suppliers showing off their goods. Keep an eye on their Twitter to find out when the next one is!

Monday, 20 March 2017 14:39:05 Europe/London

STS at the 2017 NMBS Exhibition
STS will be attending the NMBS Exhibition at the Ricoh arena in Coventry on 5th April. Come see us on Stand 75!

The NMBS Exhibition is one of the biggest and best events on any merchant's calendar, and is always hugely attended by both merchants and A collage of the NMBS Exhibition and the NMBS Logosuppliers alike. The exhibition is one of a kind, where the emphasis is placed on trading with the attending merchants, who will be able to take advantage of on-the-day exclusive deals and additional rebates. Additionally, the chance for the merchant members to meet and interact with the suppliers is a very valuable experience and one that should make the trip to Coventry well worth the effort.

Last year's exhibition was the most attended in its near fifty year history, with 906 merchant visitors and in excess of 250 NMBS suppliers appearing at the show. This year looks to be even better than that, with approximately 1200 merchant visitors registered to attend.

This year, STS will be attending the show, exhibiting on Stand 75. Our On-The-Spot Buy will be our MegaTank Tanking Kit, which is an easy to use 8m² system. It can be painted or tiled over and can be used in any wet area to completely waterproof your room.
STS will also be offering a 12.5% rebate on any orders placed on the stand, which is not to be sniffed at!

STS is best known for NoMorePly, the fastest growing brand of fibre cement board in the UK. We manufacture and distribute a range of boarding and wetroom systems, plus tiling supplies including trims and tools. All our products are tried and tested to consistently outperform alternatives and all systems come woth lifetime guarantees for the user's complete peace of mind.

Make sure you come see us at Stand 75 on 5th April to take advantage of our offers!
